Wednesday flash fiction has returned!
Story prompt: There is a chasm. 200 words.
There is a chasm in my mind. From deep inside, voices call to me—whispering, shouting. Screaming.
I carefully avoid going anywhere near it, but it grows every day, making it impossible to avoid the voices. My doctor tells me to stay away, reminding me of what happened to my mother. It runs in families, she says.
She doesn’t say crazy. That crazy runs in the family. Have to give her props for that.
She doesn’t understand. She can’t know what it’s like to have your mind so consumed that you no longer know the difference between safe and unsafe thoughts.
Today, I slipped into those dark depths, and the sensation both terrified and elated me. When you’re slowly losing your mind, elation is a sensation hard to come by. I might have lingered there.
I don’t know what I’d been afraid of. For the first time in my life, I feel free. Like I finally know who I am and what my purpose is. The voices are mine, speaking truth I've known all along. I know what I’m doing. It’s the world that doesn’t understand.
I’m not crazy.
The world is.
